Perfect Summer Book Bag Sewing Tutorial

In addition to a sewing machine and thread

you will need:

½ m of cotton fabric 45in wide cut as follows

27cm x 57cm- Front

27cm x 33cm- Inside

27cm x 17cm- x2 Page holders inside

39cm x 6cm- x2 Straps

30cm of ribbon

Interfacing 27cm x 17cm- x2

14in Zip

Method

  1. Cut out all the pieces NOTE THAT THE AMOUNTS ONLY JUST FIT ON 1/2m SO CHECK BEFORE CUTTING.

2. Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the page holders.

3. Press the page holders in half along the longest side with the wrong sides together and pin onto the inside piece as shown, stitch around the 3 open edges of each with a small seam allowance (use the foot edge as a guide).

4. Place the ribbon to one side along the top edge and stitch in place.

5. Fold both straps in half along the longest side with the right side together and stitch down the long open edge with a small seam allowance as in step 3.

6. Turn each strap the right way round and press so that the seam is in the middle.

7. Top stitch each long edge of the straps with a longer stitch length (3.5-4) – TIP move the needle position all the way to the right and then you can still use the foot edge as a guide but the stitch will be closer the edge.

8. Pin the straps to the inside piece 7cm from the outer edges as shown in the photo. The right sides of the straps should be facing upwards as shown. Stitch in place.

9. Lay the long front piece down with the wrong side facing you, then take the top edge and fold over by 30cm and press, see photo. Pin the zip to this fold as shown and stitch with a longer stitch length (3.5-4).

10. Unfold and then fold up the edge with the zip, creating a pocket, until the total length of the front is 33cm. Pin in place and stitch the other side of the zip.

11. Pin the front to inside right sides together matching all edges. Stitch around the edge using a 1cm seam allowance leaving a gap at the bottom edge of 8cm.

12. Snip the corners and turn the right way around, push out the corners and the press

13. Top stitch all the way around using instructions in step 7. Ensure that the open edge is caught.
